Post 1 - 2018: A short Film Analysis

The Apology Line -

It's been a while since my last post hasn't it. Well have no fear, several posts are here! The first of which will be a short review of a short film, the title of which can be seen above, in bold. It's pretty clear up there!

The Apology line is a short film that plays out a little more like a montage than a story. The gist of it, is that a phone line has been set up called "The Apology Line", and people can call it to confess what they'd like to get off their chest. It starts with a bang, with the very first caller being a girl who has supposedly cheated on her boyfriend, and she claims to not be sorry at all. So clearly this is a light and gentle tale about recognizing your mistakes.

I mentioned that the film plays out more like a montage rather than a story. This isn't entirely true. It's more a hybrid between the two, a montage of stories. The visuals seemed to be quite basic, just showing footage of streets or people generally not looking particularly cheerful. However the audio is where this film thrives. It uses several phone effects clearly edited in post, however it's done so naturally, you could quite easily mistake it for the noises the phone actually made in the moment, during the call. There are several confessions from people clearly struggling to hold in their secrets, which overshadows the entire film with a sense of unease. At least it did for me. There's a bit of shock factor for the audience with some of the calls, and others are rather subtle about the whole situation. One caller actually goes into graphic detail, almost designed to make anyone listening as uncomfortable as the man clearly is while telling it.

Overall, I'm not sure about this film. While it served to make me feel depressed or concerned, there was no reason the line existed. No one appeared to comfort them, and their audio was simply taken and put into a film. An interesting question to consider, is whether they were actual confessions, or actors for this film.
