Post 4 - Reflect on edit and feedback
With the film completed, the only thing to decide now was what we thought of it. The sound was effective, and with the vocal talents of myself and Lucy, it sounded human. The slight reverb and distortion around our voices added to the feeling that everything being heard was almost too horrific to think about. One decision I made during the edit, was to make my vocals a little less clear than Lucy's. I decided this for two reasons. First, we're hearing all these experiences from the woman's perspective. She's the one remembering, so of course she'll remember herself and her thoughts at the time a little clearer than whatever her abuser was saying. Second, the voice of the abuser was still important, but he didn't necessarily have to sound human. We as an audience are dealing with a monster, and the film makes it sound as such. It's just human enough that we may make out the odd word or phrase from the abuser, but for the most part, it just sounds like a bad time.
One of my favourite things the film does, is it allows the audience freedom to interpret it however they'd like without being utterly ambiguous. Obviously we had our own idea at the beginning, and as it diverged, it become more and more open to interpretation. Suddenly we're not sure who's thoughts we're hearing. We hear the woman mention a daughter, but are we actually hearing the memories of the daughter while her mother was being abused? It brings up questions in what it doesn't show, and that's something I quite like about the film.
Just for fun, here's a screenshot of what the finished film looked like in raw edit form. It looks rather complex for something so short I think.
