Tuesday 27th March: Working on a Drama
How did we choose the script? How did the discussions effect my role? What ideas did I have? 200 words
The next task begins! After creating the Documentary we were placed into the same groups and told we were now going to be working on a Drama. Previously in the year, the class had been asked to create a film treatment. This Drama was supposed to follow on from one of these. As there were 5 of us in the group, we had 5 ideas to choose from, so we decided to pitch and put it to a vote! My idea was a little more difficult to remember as I'd created it the year prior rather than just a few months ago like the rest of the class. Turns out I remembered it right in the middle of the group pitching ideas, which was super convenient of my brain! Miki had a horror story featuring a clown, Ryan had an everyday superhero, but Sherikye had the idea of a story through the eyes of a victim of abuse. After a vote, we agreed to work on the abuse story. We had a foundation, now we just needed group roles.
We were told that we were not allowed to be in the same role as we had been for the Documentary, which put editing out of my way. Of course, this instead opened up my personal favourite role of Sound Designer. Though reasonably skilled in the art of digital editing, I do tend to sway much more towards foley and creating sounds out of things you'd never expect! I once made a train noise by dragging my nail down a wooden door. It's interesting! Definitely what I'd like to pursue in the future! And so, we organised the group into the following roles:
(But what is this? You may ask, how have you displayed everyone in a neat and orderly colour coded list? And why do you have a crown? Well my dear blog reader! This is because shortly after the session, I set up a system for organising everyone and everything we need! And you'll just have to wait for the next blog post to find out what it's all about!)
The roles were pretty simple to organise, we were filing Sherikye's idea, so it stood to reason that she should be in charge as the Director. Miki and Ryan were both excellent behind the camera, but Miki had already taken up the mantle of Cinematography for the Documentary, so that job was gifted to Ryan. This left just the Editor and the Producer. As Megan had already been the Producer for the Documentary, the decision was practically made for us! Miki was the new Producer and Megan was assigned the role of editor! One thing to note though, is that Megan seemed rather uncomfortable editing by herself at this point, so I offered to help out with my experience for this project. While she was the main editor, I'd give pointers and help out any way I could.
(As a glimpse into my mind, my idea for the treatment, was a film about two realities. The audience would follow a girl, homeless, and hardened by the streets she lived on. It would also follow the same girl in a separate reality, in which she lived at home with her family, and she'd never been homeless in her life. The curiosities begin, when for some reason, the two switch places. I'd hoped to bring up the age old question of nature vs nurturing. What truly makes you the person you are if not just your experiences?)
With the film idea and the roles set, we got to planning out what we'd do to make this film a reality.
